A Very Different Character Almost Went To Canto Bight In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Canto Bight played a large part in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, and one of the main purposes the casino planet served was to show us a building relationship between Rose and Finn. (Well, that and to bring in more ideas about The Force at the very end.) Regardless, when Rian Johnson was putting together his ideas for the movie, Rose wasn't originally the character picked to go with Finn on that mission. In fact, in a recent Q&A, Johnson revealed that it was originally going to be Poe Dameron, but that quickly changed when Johnson realized that Poe's scenes were pretty boring. He said about the Poe Dameron scenes:

[He was] hardest to write for, honestly, just in terms of figuring out what their story was going to be was Poe. Luke was obviously the hardest overall, but besides Luke, Poe was the trickiest. Poe is such a clear-cut, simple character in [Episode VII] because he's Oscar Isaac and he's the most charismatic man in the universe and he's just rad. Honestly, I actually wrote, in the very first draft I wrote of it, Poe went with Finn on the mission to Canto Bight, and the two of them were going to be together on the mission. And it didn't work at all because those two get along so well and it'd be really boring.

In The Last Jedi, Finn leaves with new character Rose to Canto Bight to find someone who can help with a crucial infiltration mission to save the Resistance. Meanwhile, Poe stays behind to deal with Vice Admiral Holdo and stall until the duo's return. Some people felt that Poe's time would have been better spent with Finn bro-ing it up on Canto Bight. Apparently, writer-director Rian Johnson felt that way too and said during a Q & A with Collider that in the very first draft of the script, Poe was the one going to the casino-oriented planet. However, because Finn and Poe get along so well, the scenes didn't work. You need friction to make fire, and with no conflict between the two, it makes sense that those scenes felt as if they were going nowhere.

Although the scenes didn't work for every viewer, in that regard, Rose going on the mission works, because she and Finn don't get along and have different views on the war, which creates the backbone for one of the key themes of the movie.

Rian Johnson also says that Poe was one of the trickiest characters to write because he wasn't a very deep character in The Force Awakens. He was just a really cool and charismatic pilot, which was fine for that movie, but not very useful for The Last Jedi. That's what led Johnson to dig deeper and create Poe's arc of going from a hero to a leader.

I think the positives more than outweigh the negatives in 'The Last Jedi'. It's not perfect by any means but it's a brilliant addition to the Star Wars saga and opens up so many possibilities going forward. It's added freshness to the franchise, Luke still very much has a role to play and the fate of the Resistance hangs on a knife edge.

There's been one constant in all of the Star Wars movies: Anthony Daniels' presence. Until now, Daniels has appeared in all the theatrical tales set in a galaxy far, far away as C-3PO, but we recently learned that for Solo: A Star Wars Story, he won't be reprising the fussy, golden protocol droid. Instead, Daniels will play a brand-new character, and it was originally believed that this was one of Chewbacca's Wookiee allies. However, apparently there was a miscommunication, and Solo co-writer Jonathan Kasdan has clarified that rather than getting his Wookiee on, Daniels is actually playing a human character who has screen time with Chewbacca and this other Wookiee. Kasdan explained:

When I was talking about Anthony's cameo, it was a mistake of my syntax, I think. In the escape from the Kessel Mines, Anthony does not play the Wookiee, Sagwa, gobut rather his best friend, a human slave who beckons Sagwa, not Chewie, to join his escape route. Sagwa in turn invites Chewie to join Tak and himself. I'm sorry that was confusing...

So there you have it. Anthony Daniels is appearing in Solo: A Star Wars Story not as C-3PO or Sagwa the Wookiee, but a human named Tak who is enslaved alongside the Wookiees in the Kessell mines. While it sounds at first like this scene between Chewbacca, Sagwa and Tak might take place before Chewie has met Han, Kasdan also passed along a script excerpt that reveals that L3-37 is in the scene, suggesting that whatever is going on here happens after Chewie has established a rapport with the eponymous protagonist. In any case, this actually won't be the first time that Daniels has played a character other than C-3PO in a Star Wars movie, as he also briefly popped up in 2002's Attack of the Clones as Dannl Faytoni, a patron at the club on Coruscant where Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi cornered assassin Zam Wesell.

In addition to updating Uproxx on Anthony Daniels' character situation in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Jonathan Kasdan also revealed why he and his fellow writer/father Lawrence Kasdan decided to name him Tak, saying:

He was named Tak in homage to legendary DP Tak Fujimoto. And that's an exclusive, my friend. I'm not even sure Anthony knows his character's name.

Besides being the cinematographer on popular movies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Silence of the Lambs and The Sixth Sense, Tak Fujimoto also worked on the second unit photography team for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, so it's cool that his name now gets to be a part of Star Wars lore. Solo: A Star Wars Story is notable for being the first Star Wars movie not to include C-3PO (or his trusty companion R2-D2), but it's still great that the prequel adventure found a way to include him, even if there was initially a mixup regarding who he's playing.

The Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Reviews Are In, Heres What Critics Think

The park is gone, but the franchise remains. On the heels of the success of 2015's Jurassic World, there's quite a bit of fan enthusiasm to see what Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has in store for its release later this month. Luckily, CinemaBlend's own Mike Reyes was able to see the film, and his review promises a top-notch summer blockbuster. In his review, Mike wrote:

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a high-class summer blockbuster, with some unexpected emotions, a heap of the action that one would expect from such a film, and a dash of surprisingly dark moments that folks have been waiting for since Michael Crichton's book first hit shelves. This movie needs to be enjoyed in a setting that is as big and as loud as you can get it, simply because it deserves to loom larger-than-life over its audience.

It looks like you can start getting excited, folks. Mike's review not only suggests that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a good movie, but he also notes that the film balances out its fun with some darker edge that feels reminiscent of the classic Michael Crichton source material. Like some other monster movies that have debuted this year such as A Quiet Place, this is one that earns the theatrical experience.

That sentiment is echoed in THR's review of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, as A Monster Calls director J.A. Bayona has apparently tapped into his talent for bringing otherworldly creatures to life and created an atmospheric blockbuster that honors the traditions of the genre and the franchise. THR wrote:

Bayona not only nods to the histories of classic monster movies and the legacy of original Jurassic helmer Steven Spielberg; he brings his own experience to bear, treating monsters like actual characters and trapping us in a vast mansion that's as full of secrets as the site of his breakthrough 2007 film The Orphanage. Audiences put off by some dumb characterizations in the last film have much less to complain about here, while those requiring only some spectacular predators and exciting chase scenes should greet this outing as warmly as its predecessor.

It also seems that the switch from director Colin Trevorrow to J.A. Bayona has arguably served Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom well. Vanity Fair's review of the film notes that Bayona has tapped into the current boom of the horror genre and really shines as a filmmaker when he moves away from the DNA of other Jurassic sequels like The Lost World. In its review, Vanity Fair said:

Having Bayona behind the wheel, rather than Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow (who has a writing credit on this one), helps on that front as well. While the first half of the film is a petty perfunctory rehash of 1997's The Lost World, with poachers rounding up dinosaurs for profit and a little bit of sport, the second half of Fallen Kingdom does something nifty. Bayona revisits some aesthetics and moods from his lauded 2007 horror film The Orphanage by turning Fallen Kingdom into something of a spooky mansion movie, rainy and atmospheric and full of creeping shadows.

However, not every critic is quite so enamored with the return of the dinosaurs. In fact, while Indiewire noted in its review that J.A. Bayona does a commendable job making a solid action movie out of a bad script, the elements of his strength as a filmmaker don't blend properly. The review said:

Despite the awful characterizations and plot twists of Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow's screenplay, it appears that Bayona made an effort to mine great set pieces from the material. It often seems like he's trying to stuff elements of his three previous features into a single blockbuster jolt: There's the creaky house of his masterful horror movie "The Orphanage," the child-versus-beast dynamic of "A Monster Calls," and the apocalyptic natural chaos of his tsunami survival story "The Impossible," all packed with all the organizing principles of a sandbag. Look for a nifty long take in the confines of a flooded capsule, a genuinely eerie bedroom showdown, and another one that finds humans battling a giant carnivore while dangling from a roof made of glass.
