The Crazy Moment Avengers: Infinity War Actor Paul Bettany Realized How Many Actors Were On Set

Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War is going to be big. Historically big, in fact. The behemoth Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster has assembled an unprecedented ensemble of comic book heroes to fight alongside one another, and each look that we receive at the story seems to tease the most epic MCU film yet. Now it sounds like that scale was just as apparent on the set of the film, as Vision actor Paul Bettany opened up in an interview and admitted that he mistook the crew's assortment of trailers for a town during production. Bettany explained:

Then there's the fact that I woke up, and I knew we were shooting in the middle of nowhere. We were shooting an outdoors scene, and we started to descend down into this valley. There's this f-cking town, and I was like "Where the f-ck is this?" I got my phone out and there was nothing there, and that's when I realized there were no buildings, it was all trailers. I've been making movies for 20 years and I've never seen anything that big or bonkers in my life...

By their very nature, productions like an Avengers movie tend to be reasonably big. That said, even with Paul Bettany's wealth of Hollywood experience, it seems that he was utterly taken aback by the sheer scope of some of Infinity War's sequences. It was so big, in fact, that Bettany wandered into a grid of trailers and initially assumed that he had ended up in a town not located on a GPS map. And to think, we thought the airport sequence in Captain America: Civil War was big. This sounds like something else altogether.

Based upon Paul Bettany's description of the "town" of trailers in his interview with Total Film, it sounds like he is describing a similar village of trailers that we got a look at last year while Avengers: Infinity War was actually shooting these sequences. In fact, The Russos dropped a look at the makeshift trailer park on social media, and it was truly something to behold.

We can't say that we blame Paul Bettany for making a mistake with his initial assumption. That really does look like a small town in which people could actually live.

Now it is just a matter of waiting to see how all of these actors and heroes actually come together to face off against Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his Black Order when the film actually opens. The early trailers and first-looks at the movie seem to tease a multi-front film, with action happening in space, on the plains of Wakanda, and high above New York City. Beyond that, however, we do not have much information concerning how these three storylines will coalesce and bring this army of heroes together.

Audiences will get a chance to see that size and scope come together when Avengers: Infinity War debuts on the silver screen on May 4. Until then, however, make sure to catch Ryan Coogler's Black Panther when the latest Phase 3 solo film premieres on February 16.

London Fields Author Not Surprised Amber Heard's Movie Flopped

Author Martin Amis first published London Fields in 1989, and after a 15-plus year journey, a cinematic adaptation of the novel finally opened in theaters last weekend. Yet judging by the box office receipts, that wait may not have been worth it, as the film starring Amber Heard performed historically bad. Martin Amis is not surprised that London Fields flopped, although he can't point out specifically why it did, as he explained:

Not really. The film is rather confusing as it opens, and it could've done with a lot more clarity in its first half or so. That's all I can say. I mean, I never thought it would be a popular film.

Martin Amis seems to have had no illusions about London Fields being some massive box office hit. He knows his novel and he contributed to the screenplay, so Amis knew what this film would be and probably had some inkling it didn't have mass-market appeal. Since London Fields flopping didn't come as a surprise, perhaps that tempers any sort of disappointment for the author.

The novel is known as being 'unfilmable,' and while Martin Amis rejected that distinction, he also found Matthew Cullen's film to be extremely faithful. It sounds like that faithfulness and the unfilmable quality of the source material came through onscreen, as Martin Amis acknowledged to The Guardian that the film itself may have been a bit confusing.

That lack of clarity in the film could certainly have contributed to London Fields' negative reviews, and that opens up the question of whether or not the film was faithful to a fault. In his interview with The Guardian, Martin Amis seemed to have liked the film, but adaptation is a tricky balance and faithfulness doesn't always make for a good film. Stephen King hates The Shining, but it's a great movie.

Still, the fact that the film is confusing is only something that audiences would have found out after seeing it. Sure the 0% on Rotten Tomatoes probably didn't encourage audiences to see it, but that doesn't really account for the film's performance entirely.

Although Martin Amis never thought London Fields would be popular, 'not popular' doesn't really capture the scope of the film's fiscal failures. London Fields opened on October 26 and earned a dreadful $160,000 opening weekend from 613 theaters. That earned it the ignominious distinction as the worst per screen opening of all time.

A failure on that level probably goes beyond the movie being confusing. Another movie in theaters, Bad Times at the El Royale features a potentially confusing non-linear narrative and the marketing campaign doesn't really tell you what it's about, and it fared far better at the box office.

As is often the case in these situations, it's difficult to pinpoint one specific thing that did London Fields in. Anecdotally, the marketing seemed near nonexistent and what was out there didn't do London Fields any favors or let audiences know what this movie actually is. The reviews were poor and the Johnny Depp factor couldn't have helped, but like I said, it's probably more complicated than any one or three things.

At least Martin Amis got to see his novel realized onscreen, even if it performed poorly. Who knows, perhaps London Fields will draw people in with a morbid curiosity to see why it flopped so hard.

Daredevil's Charlie Cox Knows Exactly Which Avengers He'd Like To Cross Over With

For years now, fans have been clamoring for Marvel's Netflix characters to finally cross over with the heroes of the MCU on the big screen. This is especially true for Daredevil, who more so than his Netflix counterparts is a prominent Marvel hero with a longer history of collaboration with other big name characters. Alas, as of yet, that hasn't happened. But as long as these two halves exist, there will be questions about uniting them. Should that happen, Daredevil actor Charlie Cox already knows exactly which Avenger he'd like to cross over with, as he explained:

I have to be really careful here. I mean, I'm sure I can say this. And I'll just preface it by saying that I can't see how this would happen. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. But I have no information to suggest that this would ever happen. But it'd be really cool to see... I'd love to do something with Spider-Man.

Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one, and that's certainly the case here as it's hard to argue any of the other big screen MCU characters would make more sense for a Daredevil crossover than the Wall-Crawler. Spider-Man is one of Daredevil's greatest allies; the two share the same stomping grounds and have some of the same villains, so it wouldn't be some narrative stretch to have them meet up. Charlie Cox has spoken about this desire in the past, even hoping for a specific storyline where Spidey wears Daredevil's costume in court to help Matt Murdock out as he defends his alter-ego while preserving his secret identity. Daredevil was even a member of the New Avengers in the comics.

Charlie Cox was very careful when speaking with Collider at Amazing! Las Vegas Comic Con to not imply, hint, suggest or give the impression that this crossover is in the works or ever going to happen, but I think it's safe to say that he isn't the only one who wants to see this team up. The trick now is if there is the desire at Marvel to make it happen, figuring out how it could work in a way that doesn't provide narrative problems for the Daredevil series or the Spider-Man movies. Plus, there are the many business and production realities that make something like this difficult.

Many of us were hoping against hope that somehow the Marvel Netflix characters would get at least a small cameo in Avengers: Infinity War, but it wasn't meant to be. We still have Avengers 4 to look forward to and Spider-Man: Far From Home, along with a whole mysterious Phase 4, so the future is full of possibility that one day Spider-Man and Daredevil will finally meet up and this cinematic universe might truly become shared.

Daredevil Season 3 does not yet have an official release date, but when it does finally arrive, we know that the Man without Fear will have his hands full with the return of Kingpin and the debut of Bullseye.
