Why Iron Man Won't Be Recast When Robert Downey Jr. Leaves, According To The Infinity War Directors

We're less than two weeks away from the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War and directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been clear that the latest Marvel flick is a culmination of sorts, to the point where some beloved characters are going to die. Although we won't know the fate of Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man for a few more days, the Rosso brothers have now explained that if and when Robert Downey Jr. eventually leaves the MCU, Iron Man isn't likely to be recast. Joe Russo explained why, noting,

There is nobody who can take over Iron Man from Robert. I don't think the audience would accept that. He never mentioned to us about leaving Iron Man, but it will happen at some point of time.

A lot of the early actors in the Marvel universe -- people like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans -- are reaching the ends of their contracts, leading much of the talk about potential deaths in the movie to revolve around characters like Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. (And possibly Vision, but that's a different story.) Of course, it should be noted that Avengers: Infinity War is setting up for Avengers 4, so the body count may not be particularly high in this April's outing. In addition, although some people are going to bite the dust during the events of this particular Thanos-oriented story, Iron Man could still be standing when the final post-credits scene in Avengers 4 rolls. What happens with his contract after is anyone's guess.

The point is, from what Joe Russo told the Hindustan Times, when Robert Downey Jr. eventually leaves the MCU to make room for newer talent, it's unlikely that the MCU would look to recast the role of Tony Stark, as has happened with iconic characters like Batman and Superman over the years. While there are some fans out there who might like to see Robert Downey Jr. in the role forever, Joe Russo also confirmed that eventually Robert Downey Jr. will be calling it quits, echoing comments Downey Jr. himself has made. Per Russo:

He can't play the character forever. I am sure there are lots other things he wants to do in his career. But he loves playing the character, I know that, and we love working together. We will see where it goes from here.

Although, the Iron Man armor could theoretically live on after the character does. We'll have to wait and see what happens. As for whether or not this will be happening sooner rather than later, we'll be able to find out just what exactly is going on with Marvel when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters a wee bit early on April 27. It's expected to be a really big opening weekend for a movie, and if you can't see the flick opening weekend, we highly suggest avoiding Internet spoilers, because presumably there will be a lot of them. Unless you like spoilers, in which case you're a (wo)man after my own heart, and take a look at our full Avengers: Infinity War guide.

The First Halloween Trailer Is Terrifying And Epic

The First Halloween Trailer Is Terrifying And Epic

With the trend of nostalgia proving endlessly successful, it seems like just about any film property could rise from the dead. This includes the horror genre, as Blumhouse Productions will bring moviegoers back to Haddonfield for the upcoming Halloween movie. Jamie Lee Curtis is once again back to play OG scream queen Laurie Strode, with a brand new story that ignores all of the previous Halloween sequels. Fans have been eager to see the first glimpse at the upcoming slasher, and now the first trailer has finally arrived. Spoiler alert: it didn't disappoint. Check it out-- everyone is entitled to one good scare.

Does anyone else have chills? Michael Myers has returned to Haddonfield, but this time Laurie Strode isn't going to be a helpless teenagers. She's been anticipating their final showdown, and has prepared her home like some sort of safe house. But as Halloween fans know, that doesn't usually keep Michael out.

The Halloween trailer opens with some new characters: a documentary crew who is doing research about Michael Myers and the grisly murders he committed 40 years ago. Michael has been kept in Smith's Grove Penitentiary for the decades following his attack on Laurie's life, but Jamie Lee Curtis' character seems to understand that it's only a matter of time before they face off one last time.

Blumhouse's Halloween is already setting itself apart narratively than any of the previous sequels. This latest version of Laurie Strode is far more hardened than anything we've seen before, despite having raised a family. Her terrifying experience with Michael Myers (who is NOT her brother) is basically an urban legend around Haddonfield, and Laurie's house looks like a bit of a shambled mess. It seems like everyone has moved on from that night except for her.

Overall, it also seems like the new Halloween movie is going for more realness than any sequel since Halloween II. Michael Myers won't be magically escaping Smith's Grove, but able to escape through a bus crash. He doesn't seem to be an immortal monster, but a terrifying psycho who is hellbent on revenge. Despite both he and his mask aging, it's clear that he's spent his time in captivity thinking about murdering his sole survivor.

But Laurie is clearly not the only person in danger. Michael's escape also puts her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) at risk as well. Halloween will no doubt be able to follow all three Strode women as they attempt to survive the night. Smart money says that the family will also work out their issues in the process, as Laurie's decades of paranoia have probably put a strain on their relationship.

Halloween will arrive in theaters on October 19th, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Ready Player One Ticket

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Ready Player One Ticket

A quest of mythic proportions is about to unfold on theater screens far and wide, as Ready Player One is now booting up Steven Spielberg's latest adventure for all to see. And saving the Oasis never looked this good on paper, as Ernest Cline's best-selling novel is about to cross the threshold from the printed word into a major motion picture. But does this movie deserve the extra 3D gloss, or should you be saving your money for a sweet Oculus Rift rig and treadmill?

Leave it to us at To 3D or Not To 3D to collect the keys of knowledge, and deliver sound judgement as to whether the extra ticket money is worth your while. If you're curious about how we liked the film itself, you can head over to our official review and find out. But here and now, we're about to slip on our glasses, and jump into the 3D evaluation of Ready Player One!

Quite frankly, watching Ready Player One on a 2D screen is the best proof that this film needs to be seen in 3D. With the visuals already positioning themselves to be thrown at the camera, and a lot of the action and effects just begging for some third dimensional attention, this concept fits like a hand in a well crafted haptic feedback glove. If you can film a movie in such a manner that the 3D conversion is less a suggestion, and more an essential / demand, you've got the touch.

Steven Spielberg and his 3D conversion team not only knew what they were doing on the conversion for Ready Player One, they purposely tweaked the visuals in ways that they felt conveyed the difference between the real world of Wade Watts and the world of the virtual OASIS. This attention to detail shows throughout the film's 3D presentation, but there's still one slight problem and it's the brightness factor of the picture. Other than that though, this is damned impressive work.

When it comes to objects being thrown off the screen, and into your face, Ready Player One is the most impressive 3D conversion I've seen this year. From the race for the Copper Key in the first act of the film, you're assured a level of eye-popping thrills that doesn't let up. Coins scattered to the winds, cars getting wrecked up, and even the debris from collisions fly out at the audience, and this level of detail remains throughout the rest of the film. By time the movie's over, you're almost hit by a mail truck, even more afraid of zombies, and have to resist grabbing a pen to sign a contract.

The 3D experiences is only half encapsulated in the art of projecting the action into the audience. If you're gonna play the game, you need to show the folks in the seats that there's a world beyond the window as well, full of depth and obstacles. Thankfully, Ready Player One is just that type of movie, as there is boundless depth in the images shown on the screen. Between both the more subtle real world scenes, and the "deep 3D" that Steven Spielberg aimed for with the OASIS sequences, there's a lot of distance for the eyes to drink in with every frame. And the characters are properly spaced between each other, and their environments, with all aspects shown in living, breathing motion.

A consistent problem with 3D films has always been the brightness factor. With a pair of black / grey tinted glasses that automatically dim the picture in front of you, the brightness of the picture being shown needs to compensate such a dampening effect. Now part of this lies within the hands of the folks crafting the conversion of a film like Ready Player One, but part of it also lies in the theater management's hands. If their rig isn't properly maintained and/or calibrated between shifts from 2D to 3D features, this will play havoc with how a 3D film is shown. For the most part, the brightness on Ready Player One isn't horrific, as the colors of the OASIS shine bright and true. Still, there are select sequences that are so dark, they're a bit eye straining.

Should your eyes need a rest from the 3D action, and they will during Ready Player One's almost two and a half hour running time, you'll be able to take in the level of blur that the picture is displayed in. That blur is there in order to manipulate the 3D nature of the image you're watching, and usually the more there is, the more complex the effect is. And just as true as the fact that the 3D in Ready Player One is shown in various, complex shades of third dimensional magic, the blur that winds up on the screen is intricate and plentiful. Even better, it feels like this 3D conversion is designed to ease the viewer into total immersion, as the film starts with a more subtle degree of blur, only to scale into the level of blur that winds up overtaking the film's visuals by the end.

With all of the action packed, eye-popping visuals that Ready Player One has in its cannon, one would think that there'd be a ton of jumpy visuals that mess with your eyes. That couldn't be further from the truth, as there are some insane panning shots in the OASIS, and even with the camera jumping in rapid succession from angle to angle, you don't lose a step with your senses. The only reason the audience health score gets a slight ding is the fact that since it's an almost two and a half hour movie, and the brightness factor isn't where it should be, your eyes get a little bit strained over time.

Steven Spielberg has shown time and time again that he understands filmmaking to a tee. The 3D conversion to Ready Player One is a prime example of just that, as the 3D presentation isn't merely something implemented to squirrel away revenue. Quite honestly, this is a film that's more exciting when you can see it in a fully immersive medium, such as the IMAX 3D presentation that's in theaters now. Besides the brightness factor dampening the experience ever so slightly, I can't recommend this IMAX 3D experience any higher. If you're going to see Ready Player One, you need to see it in 3D - no questions asked. (And if you're not quite sold just yet, take a look at Spielberg and his crew explain how 3D fits into the Ready Player One experience!)

Michael Fassbenders Kung Fury Just Got Wilder, Added Arnold Schwarzenegger

Michael Fassbenders Kung Fury Just Got Wilder, Added Arnold Schwarzenegger

Back in 2015, director David Sandberg (not to be confused with Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg) released the short film Kung Fury, which at its core was a love letter to 1980s martial arts and action movies. Made off a $630,000 budget, the 31-minute Kung Fury was met with a lot of positive reviews and continues to enjoyed on several digital platforms, but we'll soon be returning to this world for a feature-length sequel. It was announced earlier this week that Michael Fassbender will lead a Kung Fury movie, and now word has come in that he'll be joined by one of the most popular action stars of the '80s and '90s: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After completing his two terms as California's governor in 2011, Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to the world of acting, appearing in movies like Terminator Genisys, The Last Stand, Escape Plan and the Expendables entries. Now he'll be adding Kung Fury to his list of action-related credits, as it was announced that he'll co-star alongside Michael Fassbender and David Hasselhoff, the latter of whom appeared in the original short film. In addition to producing the Kung Fury movie through his Laser Unicorns banner, David Sandberg will also be appearing on camera to reprise the eponymous protagonist. While the official announcement of Schwarzenegger's casting didn't identity the actor's Kung Fury character, THR has heard that he'll be playing the President of the United States.

Set in an alternate 1985, Kung Fury follows the hero of the same name, who keeps the streets of Miami safe by leading the Thundercops. This elite police force's members have been assembled from all across history to defeat the evil Kung Fuhrer, Adolph Hitler. However, after one of the Thundercops falls in the line of duty, a new villain emerges to assist the Kung Fuhrer in obtaining the ultimate weapon. With no other options left, Kung Fury will have to travel across time and space to save his allies, defend the Miami Kung Fu Academy and wipe our the forces of evil for good. Assuming that Arnold Schwarzenegger's President isn't corrupt and working with the Kung Fuhrer or this mysterious enemy, ideally that means that he'll be Kung Fury's ally, presumably giving the main hero his orders or something along those lines. David Hasselhoff will likely be voicing the Hoff 9000 again, but it remains to be seen how Michael Fassbender's character fits into the story.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on the development of this Kung Fury movie. In the meantime, Arnold Schwarzenegger will next appear in Viy 2: Journey to China, which hits theaters later this year. Schwarzenegger will also return for the sixth Terminator movie. For those of you wanting to plan your trips to the theater, head over to our 2018 release schedule.
