Shazams Mark Strong Almost Starred In An X-Men Movie

Mark Strongs latest role as the villain Dr. Sivana in Shazam! isnt anywhere close to his first rodeo in comic book movie adaptations. Hes been Frank DAmico in Kick-Ass, Sinestro in Green Lantern, Merlin in Kingsman and he almost played a villainous mutant in an X-Men film. Heres what Strong said of his role that never was:

Matthew Vaughn did ask me to do X-Men: First Class. There was a bad guy in X-Men that Kevin Bacon played. Because I speak German it just seemed so logical having worked with him that I would play that part, but I think at that point we both felt I think I had just done Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes and it had been just too many bad guys very recently. So that one we didnt go down the path of that.

How interesting is that. According to Mark Strongs recent words to ComingSoon.net, he was in the running to play Sebastian Shaw in 2011s X-Men: First Class. The character turned out to have an important role in the origin story of Magneto, as a Nazi in the concentration camp who guided Erik to manifesting his powers out of his rage and murdered his mother in front of him. He eventually showed up as the main villain the X-Men must take on when Erik is an adult. Kevin Bacon won the role and did an effective job as Shaw, but looks like Strong was originally an option the filmmakers seriously considered.

Because Mark Strong was a past collaborator to First Class director Matthew Vaughn for both Kick Ass and Stardust, he immediately thought of the actor to take on the role of Shaw especially considering Strong could already speak German. But since the actor had done quite a few high profile bad guy roles recently, he decided against it. He would however take on the role of Sinestro during the same year of X-Men: First Class was released, though the famous DC didnt quite get to live out his full potential in the famous superhero bomb.

Mark Strong now gets to be the DC villain he was meant to be as Dr. Sivana in Shazam! which critics have raved about ahead of its upcoming weekend release. The villain will go head-to-head with 14-year-old Billy Batsons adult superhero alter ego Shazam, who is discovering his fantastic powers with his fellow foster kid friend Freddy in a hilarious and entertaining new superhero origin story.

Mark Strong recently expressed what attracted him to return to another comic book adaptation to CinemaBlend, by explaining he loves the crowd-pleasing humor of the hero and the dark, weird and creepy story of his newest bad guy character. You can check out Strong as Sivana in Shazam!, in theaters on April 5.

Shazam! is absolutely a movie that many kids can enjoy and it will probably work for a wider cross section of the younger audience than most superhero movies. However, the important distinction is that while Shazam! is largely going to be ok for kids, if you have the impression that Shazam! is for kids, we should clear that up right now.

Kevin Smith Wanted Christian Bale As The DCEUs Batman For One Solid Reason

Kevin Smith Wanted Christian Bale As The DCEUs Batman For One Solid Reason

While superhero movies are everywhere, there are certain characters that carry more iconography and legacy. Chief among them is Batman, as Gotham's Caped Crusader has been portrayed in both live-action and animation. Ben Affleck's is the DCEU's Bruce, debuting only a few years after the completion of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy. Affleck's experienced and jaded Bruce Wayne was considered one of the high points of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, although DC superfan and director/writer Kevin Smith was hoping Christian Bale would return to the role. Why? Because Nolan was a producer on Man of Steel, therefore opening the possibility up for a crossover and even a shared universe. As Smith tells it,

It feels like they weren't saying that Ben was Christian Bale, but they were saying like 'oh he's been around for years he's not that guy anymore.' I think I would have preferred it, and this ain't shitting on Affleck, but as a guy who loved the Nolan trilogy when they announced like hey they're making Man of Steel and Chris Nolan's a producer on it, 'I was like "oh fuckk man, so that means like his Batman and his Superman will coexist.' And then ultimately it wound up being Zack Snyder's Superman and Batman instead. I would have preferred the Christian Bale version just as a continuity freak.

Is anyone else's mind blown? While Christopher Nolan's involvement in Man of Steel was definitely exciting at the time, there was no way of knowing that Zack Snyder's Superman film was actually going to be the first entry in another shared universe. As such, the possibility of Christian Bale popping up as Bruce Wayne wasn't at the forefront of most people's minds. That is, except Kevin Smith.

Kevin Smith's comments about the Bale/Affleck debate come from a new episode of his podcast Fatman of Batman. While talking fan questions, Smith revealed how he hoped Christian Bale could continue his tenure as Batman, and therefore crossover with Man of Steel. Ultimately both Bale and Christopher Nolan turned over the mantle of the Dark Knight, making room for Batfleck and all of his sad meme glory.

In his same conversation about Christopher Nolan's involvement in Man of Steel, Kevin Smith also maintained that an organic shared universe like that would have avoided a ton of fan criticism, saying:

And also it would have been like, what does everyone bitch about DC movies doing? Oh, they're trying to be like Marvel and catch up to Marvel. They had it right there. They were like making these fucking Batman movies forever so now we're just going to connect them, so we've got a universe but instead they launched a brand-new universe.

Keeping Christian Bale on as Batman was probably a bit unrealistic, especially after he starred in three movies. And though Ben Affleck has done a great job as the character, it's unclear how long he'll keep on the helm after the less than stellar reviews of Batman v Superman, Justice League, and Suicide Squad. We'll just have to wait and see.

The next installment in the DCEU is James Wan's Aquaman on December 21st, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Looks Like Disney Worlds Safari Had A Live Giraffe Birth

Trips to Walt Disney World are supposed to be magical experiences that you'll remember for a lifetime, but a few lucky guests to Walt Disney World this week got to witness something extra special as a giraffe in the Kilimanjaro Safari at Disney's Animal Kingdom gave birth this week, and guests on the attraction during the event actually were able to witness it happening.

The safari trucks that were carrying guests within view of the event slowed down to give everybody a view at the remarkable event taking place. From all accounts, the labor occurred without incident and it appears that several ride vehicles got to see the birth at various stages, so there were many making sure that everything turned out ok.

This is the second baby giraffe to be born in the Kilimanjaro Safari in less than a year. In October, a female calf was born, who, thanks to votes from Disney fans, has been named Amira, Swahili for princess.

According to Heavy, The Kilimanjaro Safari attraction was closed for a time following the birth, likely so that Disney cast members could tend to the mother and baby. The attraction has since reopened (and has about a 60 minute wait time as of this writing if you're curious). Disney parks has since confirmed the newborn is a boy.

While the Kilimanjaro Safari isn't the most popular attraction at Disney's Animal Kingdom anymore, that would be Flight of Passage in the Avatar-themed land, it once was, and it's still a major draw. Modified jeeps take guests into a recreation of African wilderness, on a piece of land that is, by itself, larger than the square footage of the entirety of Disneyland in California.

Every ride of the safari is truly unique as the animals roam about the space with some degree of freedom, so you never quite know what you'll see. The freedom is not absolute, as there are barriers keeping certain animals within certain spaces, but the creative Disney Imagineers have made sure these barriers aren't visible to the guests, so everything looks wide open. It's the closest most of us will get to an actual African safari, and it fits the bill quite nicely.

Unfortunately, if you've got a vacation planned to Walt Disney World and you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the newborn, that won't be possible. Mother and child will be kept behind the scenes for the next month or two so the pair can nurse and bond properly. Then they'll be let out for the world to see.
