Looks Like David Arquette Is Down For Scream 5
It's no secret that the horror genre is in a bit of a renaissance, as new and exciting properties hit theaters to critical acclaim and box office success. Blumhouse's Halloween went back to basics, and brought one of the most iconic horror franchises back for a record breaking new sequel. Now the question is about which horror classic will be revived next.
In the current time of reboots, it seems like any franchise could be brought back. Scream was a game changer when it arrived in 1996, so could a fifth movie be coming down the line? David Arquette starred as Dewey in the first four films, and seems to be open to fifth film, recently saying:
Who knows. I think it'd be fun. I think we lost some of the fans along the way, but I think there could be a resurgence at some point... where there's more nostalgia for it.
While not jumping out of his seat with enthusiasm, David Arquette seems to think the idea of returning to Woodsboro would be enjoyable. Of course, it might be a difficult road to the theater.
David Arquette's comments to Slasher Radio are sure to excite the hardcore Scream fans out there. Wes Craven's self-aware, meta horror franchises helped bring a resurgence of the slasher subgenre, and brought a mixture of comedy and terror that audiences hadn't seen before. But not every film has been a box office success, so there's been less sequels than other iconic franchises.
The most recent installment came with 2011's Scream 4, once again directed by the late Wes Craven. It brought back original stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox, while also adding the likes of young talent like Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, and Rory Culkin.
Scream 4 brought the franchise to a modern audience, but was generally considered a box office disappointment. The project was made on a $40 million, and managed to rake in $97.1 million in theaters. While fans were hoping it was the start of a new trilogy, there was never another sequel.
To make matters more complicated, Wes Craven died in 2015 at the age of 76. Craven directed every film in the franchise, and it was his vision that brought the project to life in the 90s. It's unclear who could take the legend's place if another movie is greenlit.
Narratively, there certainly seems like plenty of opportunities for Scream 5 to continue the story. The trio of heroes managed to survive Jill's evil plot, with the fallout of the latest mass murder unclear. Additionally, there are some interesting new characters to catch up with. Marley Shelton's Deputy Judy was a serious scene stealer, and Hayden Panettiere's character Kirby was never seen actually dying-- with even Wes Craven acknowledging her possible survival on Twitter.
